Band Program
A
basic philosophy of the Parkway West Band Program is to maintain a balance
of quality in all three curricular areas of the program: concert, jazz and
marching. The performing ensembles at West include: Symphonic Winds,
Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band, Concert Band, Jazz Lab A, Jazz Lab B,
Marching Band, and a sports Pep Band.
Parkway
West High School offers a variety of band experiences to suit each
student's special talents. During
the first quarter of school, members of the Symphonic Band, Wind Ensemble,
and Color Guard make up the Marching Band that performs at all home football games, as well as
several parades and competitions. At the conclusion of marching
season all wind and percussion students continue their music education in
Concert Band. The ensembles perform music of the highest quality
stressing tone production, musicianship, an interpretation of various
styles. Members of these groups are eligible to audition and
participate with the orchestra, the jazz bands, and with various small
ensembles. The members of the Wind Ensemble and Symphonic Band may
continue to rehearse and perform together as the Symphonic Winds.
These students also perform at home basketball games as the Pep
Band. Students in Concert Band concentrate on musicianship,
fundamentals of music, and interpretation of performance styles.
Concerts are given during the year.
A
Parkway West Band member is expected to attend all rehearsals and
performances of the organization, including the following:
-
Attendance
is required for all summer rehearsals. Contact Mr. Curtis if you
have a conflict.
-
Daily
attendance at Band Camp.
-
Daily
attendance in band class and scheduled band practices.
-
Attendance
at Saturday morning rehearsals if needed (usually on competition
days).
-
Performance
at all home football games and at the state playoffs if West's
Football team is involved. (Students are required to stay for
the entire football game).
-
Other
activities such as parades, Marching Band contests, assemblies and
extra rehearsals deemed appropriate by the Director.
-
JOBS,
APPOINTMENTS, VACATIONS, ETC., MUST BE SCHEDULED AROUND THESE
REQUIREMENTS!
